But how did it become a school for 900 pupils from its original use as a ducal palace for one family? We'll look at the events from 1889 to 1923 from the decline of a leading aristocratic family to the creation of a new public school before modern times paved the way for modernisation.
Introduction. The academic experience at Stowe is designed to encourage intellectual curiosity, a thirst for knowledge and understanding and independence of thought and expression. Stoics are asked to be committed and enthusiastic learners, to embrace challenge and to see failure as a necessary step in achieving progress.
Stowe School opened with its first 99 pupils, mainly aged 13, on 11 May 1923. There were two boarding Houses, Bruce and Temple, then both in the western part of the mansion.
The Stowe 1st teams compete at the top level of National school sport and we enjoy regular fixtures each Saturday against schools in the very competitive Midlands League, this allows up to 35 teams across a range of sports to have competitive opportunities.
The 13+ Admissions Process. Each year we take approximately 180 pupils into the Third Form (Year 9). We advise families to start the initial process when their child is in Year 4 or 5 and recommend visiting on an Open Morning with the aim of narrowing your long list of schools to a short list of three or four.
Stowe Centenary. The Centenary celebrations to be held between now and the end of 2023 will give, we hope, many members of the Stowe community the opportunity to come together to celebrate the first 100 years of the School.
Stowe School is an independent co-educational boarding School with approximately 900 pupils. There are around 500 full and part-time staff with 60 staff and their families living on site. In January 2021, Winchester House and Swanbourne House Schools became part of The Stowe Group.
