Fonts can be based in different eras—most type forms were influenced by history. Classifying fonts can help you decide which style to choose and what combinations to use for your next project.
- Serif. Serif typefaces are classic, elegant, and highly versatile font type. The distinguishing characteristic of serifs is the dashes or feet at the tops and bottoms of the letterforms or characters.
- Sans Serif. Sans serif fonts do not have the small dashes or feet at the tops and bottoms of letters. Instead, they feature crisp edges. While serif fonts present more of a classic and elegant feel, sans serifs are more modern and clean.
- Slab Serif. Slab serif fonts could be considered a sub-category of serif fonts, but we’re breaking them out into their own classification because there is an important distinction, and because they are extremely popular.
- Display. Display fonts, or decorative fonts as they’re sometimes called, don’t necessarily have a common theme or style. Of all of the categories covered in this article, this is the biggest, broadest category because so many different fonts can fit within the definition.
- Serif fonts. Serif fonts are the most classic, original fonts. They are named for the little feet at the top and bottom of the letterforms. Serifs date back to the Romans who flared their brushstrokes out at the top and bottom, creating what we now know as serifs.
- Slab serif fonts. Slab serifs are the fonts with the most impressive, large serifs. They are the louder cousins of the classic, quiet serifs, that rose to prominence in the billboards, posters, and pamphlets of the 19th century, designed to yell their message from a good distance.
- Sans serif fonts. Sans serifs are fonts that lack the little serifed feet. They started popping up in the mid-19th century but truly hit the big time in what’s known as the “Modern” era, in the twenties and thirties.
- Script fonts. Script fonts are those that mimic cursive handwriting. They are separated into two categories, reminiscent of a party invitation: formal and casual.
One thing to consider when choosing a font is how you submit your essay. When you submit a hard copy or a PDF, your reader will see the text in whatever typeface you use. Most electronic submission formats, on the other hand, can only use the fonts available on the reader’s computer.
