Mostly arable land bordered by mangrove trees, it wasn’t even on the radar during the Florida Land Boom years, and the railroad that brought pioneers to the west coast was miles away.
Pine Island Center is the location of the island's two large grocery stores, along with an elementary school, library, museum, swimming pool, and a large park. Sixteen-mile-long Stringfellow Road ( County Road 767 ) is Pine Island's main road and connects St. James City on the south end of the island with Bokeelia and Pineland on the north side of the island.
