- The Architecture & Archaeology. Vietnam's location at the crossroads of multiple civilizations has left its mark on the land. The Dai Viet civilization ruled the north and later became dominant throughout the country — the remnants of their Chinese-influenced culture can be seen in historic buildings like the Temple of Literature, an ancient university that educated Vietnam's elite centuries ago.

- Giac Lam Pagoda. Believed to be the oldest temple in HCMC (1744), Giac Lam is a fantastically atmospheric place set in peaceful, garden-like grounds. The Chinese characters that constitute the temple's name (覚林寺) mean 'Feel the Woods Temple' and the looming Bodhi tree (a native fig tree, sacred to Buddhists) in the front garden was the gift of a Sri Lankan monk in 1953.
To avoid the heat and to see Saigon at its liveliest, the best time to explore any hẻm is in the morning. Just watch out for motorbikes, free-roaming chickens, and friendly children keen to practice their English.
