The Mothman Prophecies is a 2002 American supernatural horror-mystery film directed by Mark Pellington, and starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney. Based on the 1975 book of the same name by parapsychologist and Fortean author John Keel, the screenplay was written by Richard Hatem.

Based on true events in Point Pleasant, Virginia, "The Mothman Prophecies" examines a series of inexplicable occurrences through the eyes - and mind- of one man.
In the small town, local Sheriff Connie Mills (Laura Linney) struggles with many sightings of a mothlike creature taller than a man being reported, while John believes that an explanation for his wife's fate can be found. The deeper John digs, the clearer the mothman's purpose arises, only to leave his life in immediate danger, so it seems.
