Restored a Tascam 488 this weekend! I had a really fun time taking this beautiful machine apart and was delighted to find out the only repair it needed was a replacement of the capstan belt (as well as a cleaning off of the previous, melted belt).
I'm on Logic Pro 11, just bought last Friday, on an M3Pro macbook running Sonoma 14.5 - the interface is the Tascam US-4x4, which has 4 inputs and 4 outputs. Got a mic plugged into the XLR for Input 1. Phantom power is on. Got an amplifier signal plugged into the XLR for Input 2.

6 days ago · If you can't find them locally, just call Tascam or a Tascam service center and get the belt kit for your unit. As far as cleaning, use head cleaner or isopropyl alcohol on the heads and capstans. Use rubber cleaner/rejuvinator (again found at electronics stores) on pinch roller/belts.
Jun 11, 2024 · I have a Tascam CD-A700 in which the transport fails to function beyond a couple of click sounds when hitting any transport function. It would appear that the main gear is out of position. Does anyone know the correct 'at rest' position for this gear as seen in the picture?
Jun 13, 2024 · You might have a look at the Tascam DR-70D which has a superb preamp for its price. And you might consider the Rode NTG-3 instead of the NTG-4+ - although you have to supply Phantom power to the NTG-3, while the NTG-4+ has its own battery - the NTG-3 sounds superior.
