The Mopar 273 was Chrysler's first LA small block V8. It was introduced in 1964 with a 2-barrel carburetor and made 180 HP. In 1965, a high-performance version called the Commando was introduced. The 273 Commando had a hotter cam, 4 barrel carb, and made 235 HP.

I bought this engine and 904 trans from another member here and he removed it from his 66 Barracuda. He wasn't sure if it was a Commando or not. It does have the solid lift cam with adjustable rockers. Also has the Commando valve covers and 4 bl intake. I am listing it as a complete engine but if it doesn't sell I will be parting it.
Feb 6, 2010 · The 273 (4.5 L) was the first LA engine, introduced in 1964 and offered through 1969, rated at 180 BHp. It had a 3.625 in (92 mm) bore and 3.31 in (84 mm) stroke. It had a mechanical solid lifter valvetrain until 1968 when hydraulic lifters were introduced.
Oct 11, 2011 · Rebuilding this little 273 Commando engine The goal is low budget and keep it as original as possible. Today I picked up some new Egge .020 over pistons and as has been discussed in other threads they are lighter than stock.
