Dec 16, 2015 · My favourite films seem to centre on intimate relationships and their progression/decay (Brokeback Mountain and Blue Valentine are two favourites that make a great trilogy with Blue is the Warmest Colour) and BITWC is simply the most detailed, unflinching, and honest portrayal of a relationship that I've ever seen.

A while back another poster went all Sherlock Holmes on this scene and came to the conclusion that it was real. Here's his breakdown:
The lead actress is impossibly hard to read - either staring numbly or crying through most of the film. It's a rare treat to see her smile. This is a movie that might otherwise play at a gay and lesbian film festival and then disappear, which brings us to the only reason this movie got noticed: the graphic sex scenes.

Jan 17, 2022 · Contrary to Blue is the Warmest Color, the actresses in The Handmaiden were given an explicit layout of what each sex scene would look like and were able to change or discard anything they weren’t comfortable with, practiced with clothes on before the shoot, and on the day of the sex scenes, no men were allowed on set (including the director himself).
