It works on Mac OS X and Linux systems, and automates the retrieval of map data, splitter, mkgmap, gmapi-builder, and creates a map with default options for use on Garmin devices and in Basecamp.
Sep 8, 2012 · When it comes to obtaining the map, you've got two basic options: 1) Download a map from somewhere (easier, but less customisable) 2) Create your own. If you want to download a map, there's a list of providers here. There are lots of options - some routeable and some not, customised for different uses, etc.

What differs is some of the special sauce Garmin adds atop it (heatmap type data), as well as the exact layers Garmin does or doesn’t display (how it looks, but also things like topographic lines).
