OCON Studios, also known as simply OCON, is a South Korean animation studio. Founded in 1998, it specializes in CGI-animation, movie, and produces animated series.
In the mid-90s, computer-generated graphics were a relatively niche and innovative technology. It began to be adopted by almost every country, including South Korea. Out of the many studios that began experimenting with this new technique, the most prominent was OCON Digital Magic.
OCON Studios was founded in 1996 in Seoul, South Korea, by Kim Il-ho and Woo Ji-hee.
OCON Digital Magic, as it was known originally, specialized in motion capture animation. "Cyber-humans" were popular with teens in the country at the time, and the studio became known for creating "cyber" characters, such as Dr. Nazallan, a virtual news anchor for SBS, who made humorous commentaries on current news affairs, and LulluRarra, virtual VJ's for SBS' Inkigayo, which introduced dance moves of top songs of the decade. The company also invested in merchandise for their characters, such as notebooks and T-shirts.
In 2003, plans were made for a new animated series. The premise was "an animal living in the winter." Many designs for the main character were created, the winner being a penguin, which later became Pororo. In November 2003, Pororo the Little Penguin began airing on EBS, and it achieved great popularity.
