Safety Dunce is an instrumental metal and hard rock solo album released by former Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Jason Hook in 2007. The album title is an obvious play on words of the song "The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats. Safety Dunce won a 2007 L.A. Music Award for Best Instrumental Record. [1]

I think it turned out great. Sometimes you win those and sometimes you don’t. I thought “Mama Said Knock You Out” [LL Cool J cover from the band’s The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1 album] was neat but nobody cared.

I feel like I know exactly what to do. It just takes me a little time. My process looks like this: Kevin [Churko, producer] will send me whatever songs we’ve been working on at the studio [Churko’s The Hideout]. He’ll make a rough mix of the music and he’ll Dropbox it to me and I’ll spend time at home opening the Pro Tools session. I loop record th...

I’ll do 40 to 50 passes of the solo just looping and recording every pass. Then I stop, shut it down and go downstairs and I forget about it for a minute. Then the next morning with coffee, I come back and I start listening through it. It’s really a way to hear what you’ve done. The first part of the process is you take your brain out of the equati...

The albums are my pride and joy and it’s my favorite part of the process. I’ll take that over touring any day. I’ve always been a studio rat and I have a solo record I released a few years back [Safety Dunce, 2007] and I’m always writing and recording. I like that headspace and I like being in my music by myself. I have to do it by myself because i...

It just kind of unfolded from there. It took about four years to make and won a handful of awards at festivals all over the world. It’s trending top five on Netflix right now. The thing has really blown wide open and I couldn’t be happier.

My mother was concerned I was going to do porn movies, hahaha. I said, “No, man. I’m flattered.” I had my guitar and a little amp and I just remember saying, “Meet people. Meet lots of people.” Eventually I said, “Look, I’ll come and play for free. I just wanna be in a band. I wanna be in 10 bands.” I was just offering my services to anybody that w...

That’s kinda how I got the hired gun gigs but what I realized it wasn’t making me happy. It certainly was a great experience to travel the world and experiencing all these things for the first time: television shows and international continent jumping. I wasn’t fulfilled and I wasn’t satisfied.

My heart lies in songwriting. Period. I did my solo record Safety Dunce and I was like, “I want to be creative so bad and release records so bad. I need to get out of this and find a band that has a record deal and apply my skills, knowledge and passion to that instead of just being a touring rental guitar player.”

That’s one of the reasons why we quit drinking too. What happens over a couple months tour is the hangovers start to show up in your performance and I couldn’t have that. I had to kick that. It’s very difficult to sit on a stool and play acoustic guitar in front of 20,000 people when you’re hung-over.
