Samuel Scott (1702 – 12 October 1772) was a British landscape painter known for his riverside scenes and seascapes.
This is the only painting Samuel Scott exhibited at the Royal Academy, shown there in the year before his death. The view is taken from the south bank of the Thames, looking across to the Tower of London.

English marine and topographical painter. He began as a painter of sea battles in the tradition of the van de Veldes (examples are in the National Maritime Museum, London), but in the 1740s he turned more to topographical views (usually of the London riverside) in the manner of Canaletto, who was then enjoying great success in England.

Samuel Scott (1702?-1772) and other artists began to paint views of the River Thames after Antonio Canaletto (1697-1768) arrived from Venice in 1746. The Italian became the most famous and successful painter of London riverside scenes, and British artists soon followed his example.
