Henryk Wars was a prolific Polish musician known as the King of Jazz. He was a forerunner of Polish jazz, who helped shape musical circles in Poland and abroad, seen as one of the great composers of the era, alongside Jerzy Petersburski and the Gold brothers. Born on 29th December 1902 in Warsaw, died 1st September 1977 in Los Angeles.
Over time, Henryk Wars’s American home becomes the destination for numerous pilgrimages of the Polish artistic bohemia. Krzysztof Komeda brings his new music there to show it to Henryk, and the Wars household is frequented by such guests as Mrożek, Osiecka, Grynberg or Polański. Wars visits Poland just once, in 1967.

When Henryk Wars Took on Hollywood. If Polish popular music can be narrowed down to a few key figures, Henryk Wars is undoubtedly one of them. During the Interwar period, the prolific composer for cabaret, theatre and film became known as the ‘King of Polish Jazz’ – a title which would eventually lead him to Hollywood.
