K.D. Davison’s Fragments of Paradise. With the task of organizing Mekas’s disparate shards of ecstatic life, Davison does what Mekas refused to do. By Jasmine Liu. Davison (The Soul of America) divides the movie into four parts, breaking them up with intertitles either drawn from Mekas’ own films or made to look as if they are. She photographs all her interviewees inside movie theaters, keeping the visual focus on the passion at the heart of everything.
Filmmaker KD Davison allows Mekas (who died in 2019) to tell much of his own story, as he creates his celebrated diary films and searches for those elusive “fragments of paradise” that cinema can uniquely provide. Mekas championed exhibition and pioneered distribution and preservation institutions.
