Tokyo Sonata. Tokyo Sonata (トウキョウソナタ, Tōkyō Sonata) is a 2008 Japanese psychological drama film directed and co-written by Kiyoshi Kurosawa . It stars Teruyuki Kagawa, Yū Koyanagi and Kai Inowaki as the four members of an emotionally distant middle-class family who all individually come to question their life choices and futures.

Just as the economic crisis has jolted everyday life, so it shakes up "Tokyo Sonata," which begins as a well-behaved story and takes detours into the comic, the macabre and the sublime. All you know about three-act structure is going to be useless in watching this film, even though, like many sonatas, it has three movements.
Ryûhei joins the parade of businessmen, all heading to work. Their older son, Takashi, is dropped off by his motorcycle buddy, tells his mom he's tired, and heads upstairs to bed. We then cut to Kenji at school, and his instructor, Bayashi, is teaching his 6th-grade class about respectful speech.
