Scream of Fear (originally titled Taste of Fear in the U.K.) is a contemporary story given fine direction by Seth Holt, a former editor and producer who would make only four more movies before his death in 1971. In a completely convincing interior / exterior set of the Appleby manor house, Holt and his cameraman Douglas Slocombe create an excellent mystery atmosphere.

For the first time in ten years, she has returned to her father's home -- only to be told that he is away. Penny is suspicious of her stepmother's (Ann Todd) odd behaviour, and is convinced that something is amiss.
A twisting, turning joyride of a suspense thriller with a few darker horror moments, Taste of Fear is a 60s special alright. Complete with some terrific performances from Susan Strasberg, Ronald Lewis, Ann Todd and the Hammer Horror man himself, Christopher Lee, the film sets off on a tale of stress induced visions, body-discovery and double cross.
