(Odd Obsession was released in Japan in June of 1959 and played at Cannes the following year.) More specifically, due to its jet-black sense of humor and slow-burn approach to the thriller genre, I’d say Ichikawa had Claude Chabrol’s work in the forefront of his mind while making this.
