Over a 70-year career, he has worked as a pianist, organist, arranger, music director, electronic musician, and composer. He was named a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters fellow in 2017. Dick Hyman is a world-renowned jazz pianist, composer, arranger, music director and organist. In the 1960s, Hyman created some of my favourite albums for Command Records. Over a 70-year career, he’s recorded more than 100 albums under his name, including solo piano, organ, chamber music, orchestral, Moog music and various sizes of jazz combos.
Dick Hyman has recorded plenty over the years in his own contemporary style, utilizing adventurous chord changes and daringly difficult and fast improvisations. It’s his respectful and oftentimes creative, yet stylistically accurate interpretations of early piano idioms that has given him the greatest fame, from ragtime and blues to stride and swing to more sophisticated stuff.
Dick Hyman's Century Of Jazz Piano, an encyclopedic series of solo performances, has been released on Arbors Records, while a transcription is published by Hal Leonard Music. Other newer recordings are with clarinetist Ken Peplowski, singer Heather Masse, and Mr. Hyman's daughter, violinist Judy Hyman. Mr. Hyman is a Yamaha artist.
