Karl August Hanke (24 August 1903 – 8 June 1945) was an official of the Nazi Party (NSDAP) during its rule over Germany who served as the fifth and final Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel (SS). He also served as Gauleiter of Gau Lower Silesia from 1941 to 1945 and as Oberpräsident of the Prussian Province of Lower Silesia .
Karl Hanke was a Gauleiter of Lower Silesia, a Propaganda Minister, a Reserve Wehrmacht officer and a member of the Allgemeine-SS. He was promoted to Reichsführer-SS by Hitler after Himmler was declared a traitor, but he was executed by partisans before he could assume the role.

May 21, 2023 · On May 5, Karl Hanke, appointed Reichsführer-SS by Hitler on April 29, fled from Breslau and took a plane to Prague. A few months later, he would die a violent death, presumably shot dead by Czech guards while attempting to escape from a POW transport.
