Louis Riel (/ ˈ l uː i r i ˈ ɛ l /; French: [lwi ʁjɛl]; 22 October 1844 – 16 November 1885) was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and a political leader of the Métis people. He led two resistance movements against the Government of Canada and its first prime minister John A. Macdonald.

The Métis are people who have European and First Nations ancestors. They are one of the three Indigenous groups in Canada. Riel was charged with treason after the North-West Resistance failed.
Biography of Louis Riel, 1844-1885. Born in 1844, Louis Riel was the eldest son of a prominent St. Boniface Métis family. At 14, he was sent to Montreal to train for priesthood. By 1868, he had left school and was back in St. Boniface supporting his recently widowed mother and siblings.
