Anne of Cleves (German: Anna von Kleve; 1515 – 16 July 1557) was Queen of England from 6 January to 12 July 1540 as the fourth wife of Henry VIII. Not much is known about Anne before 1527, when she became betrothed to Francis, Duke of Bar, son and heir of Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, although their marriage did not proceed.

Anne of Cleves passed away on July 16, 1557, at Chelsea Old Manor, her final residence. She was 41 years old. Her death marked the end of a life that had seen her journey from a German duchy to the heights of the English court and then to a dignified life as a respected noblewoman.
Anne married Henry VIII as his fourth wife at Greenwich on 6th January 1540 but the marriage was annulled in July of that year. So she was never crowned queen. He found she was not as attractive as her portrait had suggested and called her a 'Flanders mare'.
