is the fourth episode of the ninth season of Columbo and the fifty-third episode overall. It first aired on March 31, 1990 and was directed by Vincent McEveety, in his first of seven directorial contributions to Columbo. In addition to Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo, the episode stars Helen Shaver, Ian McShane, Edward Winter and Roscoe Lee Brown.

In Rest in Peace, Mrs. Columbo, the Lieutenant faces one of his most personal cases ever, when the widow of a man he once arrested conspires to have her revenge. First, she murders her late husband's former partner, then sets her sights on Columbo's wife as her next victim.

In this episode the murderess drives Columbo home from his wife's funeral and, while in the house, views a photograph sitting on a piano, believing that the house is Columbo's home. She assumes (and Columbo confirms) that the photo is of Mrs. Columbo (as it sits in a hinged double frame opposite a youthful Frank Columbo) and tells him that she was very attractive. Up to this point the murderess had believed that she had gotten away with exacting revenge against Columbo by poisoning his wife with laced jar of marmalade. Columbo feigns grief and cleverly manipulates her into thinking that he, too, was partaking of some of the same marmalade that killed his wife, spread on a slice of toast.

Seeing him eat the marmalade, and begin presenting as though he was in medical distress, the emboldened murderess confesses to the murders of her late husband's former partner; Mrs. Columbo; and taunts Frank that he will soon be dead, as well, from the poisoned marmalade. After her confession is complete, however, he reveals his ruse; tells her that not only will he not die (because the marmalade he was using was not the one she gifted to Mrs. Columbo), but that his wife is also alive and at his "real" home (rather than the home they were in, which really belonged to another police officer) sick with a touch of flu. Then she is arrested and taken away.

Once she was safely away, he calls Mrs. Columbo on the phone to check on her condition; remarks that she can tell her sister, Rita, that he has her picture (see the photo below); and that she can pick it up tonight. He also chastises Mrs. Columbo for watching soap operas and not getting ample sleep to get better. Then he tells her that, when she gets better, he's going to take her out to get some pictures made because she doesn't have any decent ones anywhere. She protests that she is not photogenic, and he retorts that she wouldn't know because she never takes any pictures, and tells her she can take pictures with and without her hat. But the long and the short of it is that the woman shown in the photo below is asserted to be Columbo's sister-in-law, Rita - NOT his wife, the first name-less "Mrs. Columbo."

Helen Shaver's character bore a striking physical resemblance to Lyn Davis Lear, the woman who renowned TV producer married around the time The Princess Bride-which Colombo actor Peter Falk was in- was released in October 1987. Though it has not yet been confirmed if Vivian Dimitri was a hit at Lyn, Lyn had a habit of getting Norman to disassociate himself from the television work he was renowned for in the 1970s. At the time of Norman's death in December 2023, it was even reported that their son Benjamin, who was born in 1988, was not very familiar with his father's 1970s shows, instead opting to bond over South Park.
