Giorgione ( Italian: [dʒorˈdʒoːne], UK: / ˌdʒɔːrdʒiˈoʊneɪ, - ni /, US: / ˌdʒɔːrˈdʒoʊni /; born Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco; 1477–78 [1] or 1473–74 [2] – 17 September 1510) [3] was an Italian painter of the Venetian school during the High Renaissance, who died in his thirties.
Giorgione was an extremely influential Italian painter who was one of the initiators of a High Renaissance style in Venetian art. His qualities of mood and mystery were epitomized in The Tempest (c. 1505), an evocative pastoral scene, which was among the first of its genre in Venetian painting.
Giorgione's influence on 16th-century Venetian art was very great, most directly on Titian, with whom he worked, and who completed some of his unfinished pictures. Giorgione's achievement rests on his use of deeply saturated colours, his innovative poetic and often enigmatic subjects, and his novel use of landscape to create atmosphere.
