Pierre Culliford (French:; 25 June 1928 – 24 December 1992) was a Belgian comics writer and artist who worked under the pseudonym Peyo (). His best-known works are the comic book series The Smurfs and Johan and Peewit, the latter in which the Smurfs first appeared.

Peyo. Pierre Culliford (known as Peyo) was born in Brussels on 25 June 1928. He started his working life at the age of 15. He began as a cinema projectionist, and then went to work in an animation studio. The studio closed down and Peyo decided to focus on cartoon comic strips.

Peyo was a Belgian comic artist, famous worldwide as the creator of 'The Smurfs' (1958- ). These funny blue dwarfs, known in French as 'Les Schtroumpfs', first appeared as secondary characters in Peyo's medieval adventure comic 'Johan et Pirlouit' ('Johan and Peewit, 1946-2001).
