  2. Aug 28, 2018 · This means #12 heads would be for all RA III applications and for any Firebird or Tempest with the 400 cubic inch V8, manual trans and 4 barrel carb. The #13 head is for 400 cubic inch V8, M40 auto trans with 4 barrel carb used in Firebird, Tempest and Grand Prix.

  3. Jan 22, 2024 · the 428 is cooler in my opinion. the 455 has more advantage parts availability. more mounting options, more cubic inches. being they look the same on the outside no advantage. less compression for power. i think the 428 is worth more so it could fund the 455 build. either can make good power. i would go with the best block. 4. Oct 20, 2009 · Pontiac iron head chambers were always beautiful but as-cast ports sucked. I've seen some really pretty and very well ported iron heads on the Westech flowbench only flow 230 at .500 lift. That same head with small 1.96/1.66 valves will have lower flow numbers than the larger valve head at higher lifts.

  5. May 14, 2023 · R44’s are a good plug for iron heads and NGKs are good also. Maybe try leaning out the carb a little bit, or adjusting the choke slightly to lighten up the plugs. Try to get an air/fuel ratio reading and dial it in around 14 or so. It runs pretty good as a 455ho should and the plugs have been in there a long time.

  7. Jan 23, 2020 · The stroker kit for the 389 was considerably more expensive than stroking a 400. Also abandoned using iron heads and bought E-heads with the savings on the stroker kit and the sale of my 389. Shooting for 10:1 CR on the E-heads, Tripower induction and Crane H-272-2 cam (adv duration 272/284 lift 454/480 and 112 LSA).

  8. Apr 29, 2021 · The Pontiac distributors I used had 24 (12x2) in the distributor. The factory set the initial at 6 for a total of 30, but they ran best at 36 (12 initial). The most initial I ever ran on a streetcar was 16.

  9. Feb 23, 2023 · With 91 octane and 9.3:1 we can run 36 to 38 degrees total timing all in by 3,000 RPM. Higher the compression, the less timing can be applied with today's pump gas. If I were running a stock engine with the original 10.25 (10.75 claimed) compression I'd also probably be limiting total timing to 28°.
