Shrewsbury School was founded by Edward VI in 1552 by Royal Charter and for over 470 years we have a proud legacy as one of the great public schools in England. Below is a small insight into the development of Shrewsbury through the centuries.
In 1627-30 a second school building was added at right angles, to form an L-shape with Rigg's Hall. This building probably dates from 1500. It is likely to have been one of the original buildings used by Shrewsbury School.

The oldest part of the library is Riggs Hall, a timber-framed building (now at the rear of the property) built early to mid-1400s against the old town walls. It is the only surviving property of several which were rented by the school when it was founded a century later in the 1550s.
