Royal Air Force Halton, or more simply RAF Halton, is one of the largest Royal Air Force stations in the United Kingdom. It is located near the village of Halton near Wendover, Buckinghamshire. The site has been in use since the First World War but is due to close by December 2027.
A Golden Jubilee Reunion was held at Halton on 1 August 1970, organised by the station under the then Commandant, Air Commodore Bob Weighill, and it is famous for the first appearance of what became the Golden Oldies when ex-band members "borrowed" the existing Halton band's instruments and put on a dazzling display.
We were at Halton for the 50th anniversary; celebrated in August 1970. In our final year (1972), many apprentices from different entries participated in the man-powered flight project, headed by Flt Lt John Potter (One of our teachers if I recollect).
In March 1920 No 1 School of Technical Training was established at Halton, the future home of aircraft apprentice training. Scarlett remained in post until 1924 which enabled him to oversee the 8 transformation of a temporary wartime military camp into the beginnings of a permanent RAF station.
With the 1970s came the RAF’s withdrawal from the East and the start of its contraction. Technical developments and changes in social aspiration made apprentice training less attractive and less necessary and eventually, with the “peace dividend”, at the end of the Cold War, it was discontinued.
