S1.E2 ∙ The Soldier Who Didn't Wash. Fri, Aug 7, 1981. In this Russian folktale, a bargain with the devil demands that a forlorn soldier not wash for fifteen years. He grows rich, and the King, short of funds, asks the soldier for help.
Premiering on 30 July 1981, this ITV series from Harlech TV consisted of traditional folk tales from all over the world – stories handed down from one generation to the next. As far as possible, episodes were filmed in the original countries with local people playing the parts they had known since childhood.
