Batman: Gotham By Gaslight is a murder mystery set in a Victorian-era Gotham City that pits the Caped Crusader against Jack the Ripper. While there are some thrills to be had with this attempt at a Batman horror story, the film’s characters feel a bit undercooked, leading to an underwhelming climax. After all, in a whodunnit, the “who” had better be satisfying, and this one misses the mark.

The story is inspired by Gotham By Gaslight, a one-shot Elseworlds comic book from writer Brian Augustyn and artist Mike Mignola. The comic was a brisk 52 pages, more like dipping a toe into the idea of a Victorian-era Gotham rather than fully diving into the concept with a full-length graphic novel. It had only one real suspect, and he wound up being the murderer, so it wasn’t much of a mystery.

The animated feature attempts to rectify this by populating the cast with familiar Batman villains in order to make it a proper thriller. However, these characters feel more like pieces on a game board rather than three-dimensional characters, so the big reveal at the end doesn’t have as much impact as it should.

The less said about Jack the Ripper the better, for spoilers sake, but I do have to point out how strange it feels for him to be portrayed as a physical match for Batman who goes punch-for-punch with him throughout extended brawls. It’s too much at odds with the scheming serial killer who hunted women that he’s known to be; that’s not Jack the Ripper, that’s Bane. Try as it might, the film never approaches being remotely scary, in large part because of this change.

The true delight of the film is watching Batman traverse 19th century Gotham and fight crime with steampunk versions of his signature gadgets. Exploring this rich setting offers numerous little surprises and is the main selling point. That, and actor Bruce Greenwood, who previously voiced the Dark Knight in Batman: Under the Red Hood and Young Justice. He returns with a quieter, more contemplative detective than we’re used to, and to excellent effect.

In Batman: Gotham By Gaslight, the world is well-constructed and there are some standout performances, but the story at its core isn't as strong as it ought to be.
