- Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. One of Horner’s first big Hollywood productions, his work on Khan built on Jerry Goldsmith’s expansive score for the first Star Trek film, itself based on Alexander Courage’s original theme from the show.
- 48 Hours. The same year Horner scored Khan (1982), he also contributed the very modern, jazz-and-synth-laden score to 48 Hours, a pair of scores that demonstrate his versatility as a composer.

- Field Of Dreams (1989) Horner’s music was, and still is, often attacked for its unerringly fulsome nature, but he was capable of genuine restraint and subtlety when the occasion called for it.

Horner scored six films in 1995, including his commercially successful and critically acclaimed works for Braveheart and Apollo 13, both of which received Academy Award nominations. Horner's biggest critical and financial success came in 1997 with his score for James Cameron 's Titanic.
