Buyeo County (Buyeo-gun) is a county in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Buyeo-eup, the county's capital, was the site of the capital of Baekje from 538-660 AD, during which it was called Sabi Fortress. Famous people associated with Buyeo County in more recent times include noted stem-cell researcher Hwang Woo-suk.
Baekje officially changed its name to Nambuyeo (South Buyeo, Korean: 남부여; Hanja: 南夫餘) in 538. Goryeo also considered itself a descendant of Buyeo through their direct ancestral ties with Goguryeo and Baekje.
- Gungnamji Pond In Seodong Park. Gungnamji Pond is the oldest man-made pond in Korea and one of the most popular places to visit in the city, especially during summer when the lotus flowers are in full bloom.
- Buyeo National Museum. As you leave Gungnamji Pond, head east and you’ll soon find the interesting Buyeo National Museum, which houses artefacts from the Sabi period – the height of Baekje Kingdom.
- Jeongnimsa Temple Site & 5-Story Pagoda. This ancient temple site was built when King Seong moved the capital of Baekje from Gongju to Buyeo. To celebrate the new capital, he built this temple in the centre of the Sabi royal palace.
- Busosanseong Fortress. Once an imperious fortress spread across the slopes of Mt Buyo, the remains of the Busosanseong Fortress now provide spectacular sights of the city and surrounding countryside.
