Khumba is a young male plains zebra who was born with only half of his stripes akin to a quagga. He is the main protagonist of the movie, Khumba and the love interest of Tombi. Khumba starts off the movie narrating in the desert before he is born.
The film is about Khumba, a zebra who is half-striped like a quagga and blamed for the lack of rain by the rest of his insular, abusive, superstitious herd, except his dad, mom and Tombi. He embarks on a quest to earn his stripes.
The first time it's said, Khumba's mother is telling it in her story about how zebras got their stripes. The second time, Khumba says it when he's hesitating to go in the allegedly magic spring. The significance is, he's realizing what his mother was trying to tell him before she died.
When the alpha zebra's mate gives birth to a baby boy named Khumba (voiced by Jake T. Austin), it's apparent he's no ordinary zebra: His rump half is all white, unlike the rest of the beautifully striped zebras in the herd.
