The Bronfman family in Canada began with tobacco farmer Yechiel Bronfman (aka Ekiel Bronfman; 16 November 1855 - 24 December 1919) and his wife, Mindel (née Elman; 25 May 1863 - 11 Nov 1918), who emigrated from Moldova to Canada with their children in 1889, escaping the anti-Semitic pogroms of Imperial Russia.
Samuel and Saidye’s youngest son, Charles Rosner Bronfman (born 27 June 1931 in Montreal), directed Seagram’s Canadian business. He holds dual Canadian and American citizenship. Charles joined the company in 1951 and became president of Canadian operations in 1975.
Bronfman graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts in 1986, then returned to Montreal, where he worked briefly in the marketing department of the Expos, then owned by his father.
