The twelfth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was announced January 22, 2019. Casting opened that same day with a submission deadline of March 1st and later it was announced that thirteen contestants would compete for the crown this season.
Filming began in late July 2019 and the cast was officially revealed on January 23, 2020 on Twitter with a pre-recorded event showcasing the queens with Yvie Oddly as the host. The promo theme was Red, White, and Blue since 2020 was an American presidential election year. At the end of each episode, queens are seen holding signs that read "Register to Vote".
The season 12 contestant crowned "America's Next Drag Superstar" was Jaida Essence Hall, while Heidi N Closet was awarded the title of Miss Congeniality by her fellow eliminated castmates.
In October 2020, the season 12 cast returned for the Halloween special "Bring Back My Ghouls".
