Sep 4, 2020 · Writer-director Alexander Ramati’s 1985 The Assisi Underground is a well-meaning, costly, but largely ineptly told wartime adventure about Catholic monks in Assisi (Perugia, Umbria, Italy) hiding Italian Jewish refugees from the Nazis in 1943 and helping them to escape.
In World War II, when the Nazis begin to round up Jews in Italy, Bishop Nicolini of Assisi tabs a Franciscan friar to organize an underground to hide and help Jews to escape to freedom. Father Rufino establishes one of the most successful large-scale Jewish rescue operations during the war.
