Carpenters, also known as The Carpenters, were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (born 1946). They produced a distinctive soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills.
Mini Bio. The Carpenters were brother and sister Richard Carpenter and Karen Carpenter. Both grew up in Downey, California and were very musical at an early age. Richard Carpenter started his own instrumental band with his sister Karen called "The Richard Carpenter Trio." Richard played the piano and organized the music, and Karen played the drums.

The Carpenters won three Grammy Awards, and an American Music Award. They topped the Billboard Top 200 album chart with The Singles: 1969-1973, scored three Hot 100 No. 1s. Globally, they were hugely successful, as well, with 1974 tour stops in Japan getting Beatlemania-like fan receptions.
