Gander is a town located in the northeastern part of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador, approximately 40 km (25 mi) south of Gander Bay, 100 km (62 mi) south of Twillingate and 90 km (56 mi) east of Grand Falls-Windsor.

The town of Gander was once known as the “Crossroads of the World,” due to its perfectly positioned airport. Once the largest on earth, with runways big enough to land the space shuttle, it was a strategic location for refuelling and a bustling centre during wartimes.
Known as the Newfoundland Airport at the time, it was a result of a 1935 agreement between Canada, the United Kingdom, Newfoundland and Ireland. With WWII raging in Europe, Gander became a strategic post for the Royal Air Force Ferry Command in 1940.
