Oak Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, adjacent to Chicago. It is the 26th-most populous municipality in Illinois, with a population of 51,631 as of the 2023 census. [3] [4] Oak Park was first settled in 1835 and later incorporated in 1902, when it separated from Cicero. [5] It is closely tied to the smaller town of River Forest.

WELCOME TO THE OAK PARK AREA. Come meet Chicago’s fun next-door neighbors. They’re known for architecture and history, but the longer you visit, the more they reveal. Getting here is easy, deciding what to do first is harder.
- Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio. In 1888, at 22 years old, Wright borrowed $5,000 from his boss Louis Sullivan to build a home for his family. This was first completed in 1889, but one of the exciting things about the property is that as Wright’s ideas developed, so did his home.
- Unity Temple. Wright came from a Unitarian family, so when Oak Park’s Unity Church was destroyed by fire after a lightning strike in 1905 he put his hat in the ring to design the replacement.
- Frank Lloyd Wright Walking Tour. We’ve seen that Oak Park has more buildings by Frank Lloyd Wright than any other place in the world. So on these streets you’ll have a rare chance to track the evolution of his work in the early part of his career.
- Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum. Another colossal 20th-century figure connected to Oak Park is the Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author, Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961).
