I grew up in North London and it was amazing. As a little kid friends lived close by and as I got older there were buses and tubes to get me wherever I needed to. Whatever the age, there was loads to do whether locally (parks / open spaces) or in town (museums, shops, restaurants).
I grew up in a very "white" and middle class part of London. In my 250 pupil year group there were a handful of students who were of a different race. That is obviously changing now. But I have friends who grew up in more inner parts of London where similar experiences to yours were the norm.

I grew up in London, moved away for 7 years, and have been back for 7 ish years. Keep in mind most of my family and friends live in or near London. Without going into detail, I carved out a life for myself here that would not have been possible in Ottawa or Toronto.
