Jun 12, 2023 · Other notable performers with Arnheim’s band included tenor saxophonist Fred MacMurray (who became a film and television star in the ’40s and ’50s), violinist/vocalist Russ Columbo, future popular singer Buddy Clark, and future bandleader Stan Kenton who played piano with Arnheim starting in 1937.
In college, MacMurray participated in numerous local bands, playing the saxophone. In 1930, he played saxophone in the Gus Arnheim and his Coconut Grove Orchestra when Bing Crosby was the lead vocalist and Russ Columbo was in the violin section.
Arnheim composed Sweet And Lovely and a couple of guys associated with him, Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo each made a great record of that song. Arnheim's band was the featured orchestra for many years of the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Hollywood.
