Henry (1820), named for Patrick Henry, Governor of Virginia 1776-1779 and 1784- 1786; a celebrated orator of the Revolutionary War period. Highland (1805), describes the county's terrain. Hocking (1818), derived its name from the Indian word "Hoch-Hoch-ing" which meant "a bottle."
