Jun 26, 2013 · Next, in 1798, the Kentucky legislature officially created Ohio County, taken from Hardin County, as shown in the map below. This was legally effective the following year. Note that Ohio County was much larger then than it is now. Note that Muhlenberg County was created at the same time.

In 1903, Kentucky created Beckham County, but three months later it was dissolved after a dispute from a local businessman. Kentucky’s last new county — McCreary — was created in 1912. This gave the state a total of 120 counties, more than any other state except Georgia and Texas.

Counties of Ohio. There are 88 counties in the U.S. state of Ohio. Nine of them existed at the time of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1802. A tenth county, Wayne, was established on August 15, 1796, and encompassed roughly the present state of Michigan.
