York is a district and former city within Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located northwest of Old Toronto , southwest of North York and east of the Humber River . Originally formed as York Township, it encompassed the southern section of York County.
York Region covers 1,762 square kilometres from Lake Simcoe in the north to the city of Toronto in the south. Its eastern border is shared with Durham Region, to the west is Peel Region, and Simcoe County is to the northwest. The Regional Municipality of York consists of nine municipalities. Local government is organized in a two-tier structure.
