York County is a historic county in Upper Canada, Canada West, and the Canadian province of Ontario. It was organized by the Upper Canada administration from the lands of the Toronto Purchase and others.
Ontario has 52 cities, which together had in 2016 a cumulative population of 9,900,179 and average population of 190,388. The most and least populous are Toronto and Dryden, with 2,794,356 and 7,749 residents, respectively. Ontario's newest city is Richmond Hill, whose council voted to change from a town to a city on March 26, 2019.
York Region covers 1,762 square kilometres from Lake Simcoe in the north to the city of Toronto in the south. Its eastern border is shared with Durham Region, to the west is Peel Region, and Simcoe County is to the northwest. Whitchurch Township and Stouffville were amalgamated into the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville. The towns of Aurora, Newmarket and Richmond Hill were expanded to include parts of the surrounding townships. -York County was divided into the The Regional Municipality of York and Metropolitan Toronto on 1st January 1971.
Local government is organized in a two-tier structure. Public transit, water, emergency medical services and policing are handled by York Region, while curb-side garbage collection, local parks and libraries are the responsibility of each municipality.
