The history of Luzerne County is vast and storied and has connections the world over. What started out as Indigenous land, the Wyoming Valley and surrounding areas were occupied by European settlers in the mid-18th century.

On September 23, 1786, the Pennsylvania General Assembly created Luzerne County, naming it in honor of Chevalier de la Luzerne, the French minister to the United States during the latter stages of the war.
