Assault is defined by the Criminal Code as the intentional application of force to another person without their consent, or the threat of the use of force that causes the other person to fear for their safety. The definition covers a broad range of behaviour, including physical violence, verbal harassment, and intimidation.
Section 265 (1) defines assault as the intentional application of force without consent, attempting or threatening to apply force, or accosting or impeding another person while openly carrying a weapon or an imitation thereof.
