Moritz had been the head of the House of Hesse since the death of his father Philip on 25 October 1980. Moritz was a world-famous art collector. [4] [5] He was also the proprietor of the Kronberg Palace Hotel up until his death. He died of lung illness in a hospital in Frankfurt, Germany at age 86.

Maurice of Hesse-Kassel (German: Moritz; 25 May 1572 – 15 March 1632), also called Maurice the Learned or Moritz, was the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel) in the Holy Roman Empire from 1592 to 1627.
May 24, 2013 · The Head of the House of Hesse, Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse, has passed away at the age of eighty-six. The Landgrave passed away in the afternoon of May 23rd, following a long-term lung illness. The news was confirmed by Mark Miller, the Director of the Hessian House Foundation.
Sep 22, 2021 · Moritz, Landgrave of Hesse died in Frankfurt on May 23, 2013. Following his funeral at St. John’s Church in Kronberg, he was buried in the family cemetery on the grounds of the former Schloss Friedrichshof.
