It was created in 1892 for the Conservative politician George Cubitt of Denbies House, Dorking, Surrey, who was continuously elected at elections over a 32-year period. [n 1] He was the son of the architect Thomas Cubitt. Lord Ashcombe was succeeded by his son, the second Baron.

Jul 20, 2023 · He was created 1st Baron Ashcombe, of Dorking, Surrey and of Bodiam Castle, Sussex on 22 August 1892. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Surrey and Middlesex. He was Honorary Colonel of the 5th Battalion, Royal West Surrey Regiment.
George Cubitt was the first MP for the constituency of Epsom, which was established in 1885. Before that he had been MP for West Surrey since 1860. George lived on the Denbies Estate, Dorking in a grand house designed and built by his father, Thomas, in 1854.
