Amalia Malka Nathansohn Freud (née Nathansohn; 18 August 1835 – 12 September 1930) was the mother of Sigmund Freud. She was born in Brody, Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria to Jacob Nathanson and Sarah Wilenz and later grew up in Odesa, where her mother came from (both cities located in modern-day Ukraine). She was married to Jacob Freud.

RvM also reports short personal meetings with Freud’s mother Amalia, née Nathansohn, and with Freud’s wife Martha, née Bernays. He describes both of them as not very erudite and not well informed about Freud’s intellectual achievements.
But there's really very little research into Freud's relationship with his mother (called 'Amalia' on her gravestone, but mostly called 'Amalie' in the family) when they were adults.

- HE EXPERIMENTED WITH HYPNOSIS. After graduating from the University of Vienna, Freud began working at Vienna General Hospital and collaborating with fellow physician Josef Breuer.
- HIS ETHICS COULD BE A LITTLE SHAKY. Over time, Freud’s influence on psychiatry has been both celebrated and minimized. His critics argue that Freud was sometimes prone to manipulative behavior directed at his patients, as in the case of Horace Frink, an American psychoanalyst who submitted to Freud’s probing in 1921.
