Premium fuel is a higher octane fuel in the range of 91-94 octane. This compares to regular grade gasoline which is 87 octane. Higher octane fuel aims to provide greater fuel-burning stability to protect engines from the damage caused by engine knock –also known as abnormal combustion.

Aug 27, 2020 · If I live in the US, I would use 91 or higher since the cost difference is not much during a fill up there. Here in Canada, the cost difference can easily be over 12% difference, running at $1.60 per litre, I will use the 87 octane unless there is knock or a higher than 12% drop in power or fuel economy.
